So, I will not be returning to the music room next year, but I do plan on coming back someday.
I have been thinking of things to help my student teacher in the interview process and I know I will need these tips again in the future for myself. I am by no means an expert, but no one reads this blog anyway, so no worries.
They might ask you to sing in the interview.
They might ask you your best and worst qualities.
They WILL ask you how you deal with classroom management. give detailed answers.
They might ask how you deal with staff or parent issues. tell them your big on
communication, parent contact, etc.
They might want a sample of your daily lesson. be detailed again...kids come in
a look at rhythm on board, sing hello song, yada yada.
They will probably ask why you want to be a elementary music teacher.
Tell them what you've seen, what you like, things you would change.
ASK what the rotation of students is like, extra duties you will have, how
supplies are received (budget stuff), what the mentor program is like there.
They always say "tell me about yourself". I feel like it's a loaded statement. Try to include personal information and information about you as a musician. Not just one or the other.

Things I wish someone would have told me….
- Having options is a good thing! Right now, it feels like any job is a great job, but ultimately decide where you feel comfortable.
- Meet with your potential teammates and principal and make SURE you like them.
- Be confident in your abilities as a teacher.
- People in interviews want to see a genuine person. They want to know what they are signing up for, and don’t want any surprises later. Be honest about yourself, your goals, and your vision for the music program.
